The term „sustainability“ is linked to the concepts of continuity, permanence and the long term. In connection to Management it is usually used as an alternative to financial targets when setting high-level objectives. This is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough: businesses need to be able to do more than just use economic resources as efficiently as possible. They have to be able to adapt to unforeseen developments over and over again. The next step up from sustainability therefore has to be viability.
